How to test your AT&T internet speed

  1. Connect a computer to the AT&T gateway with an Ethernet cable for the most accurate result, or stay close to it on WiFi.
  2. Pause streaming, downloads and video calls on other devices.
  3. Press START above to measure download, upload, ping and jitter.
  4. Compare your result with your AT&T plan and repeat the test at a different time of day.

What speed should you get from AT&T?

AT&T offers three very different types of home internet, so the right result depends on which one you have. Plan names and speeds change over time and by address.

Service Typical download Typical upload
AT&T Fiber about 300 Mbps – 5 Gbps, depending on plan Same as download (symmetrical)
AT&T Internet Air (5G home internet) roughly 75–225 Mbps roughly 10–30 Mbps
AT&T Internet (DSL / copper) up to about 100 Mbps, often much less a few Mbps up to about 20 Mbps

With AT&T Fiber, a wired test should come close to your plan speed in both directions. If upload is much lower than download on fiber, something is limiting the connection.

Why is my AT&T internet slow?

  • WiFi instead of Ethernet – multi-gig fiber plans can only be fully used over a cable and with fast network cards.
  • Gateway location – the gateway is often installed where the fiber enters the house, far from the living areas.
  • Distance on copper lines – DSL speeds drop the farther you are from AT&T’s equipment.
  • Signal and congestion on Internet Air – 5G home internet depends on signal strength and how busy the local tower is.
  • Background usage – updates, backups and streams on other devices.

How to fix slow AT&T internet

  1. Restart the gateway from the Smart Home Manager app or by unplugging it for 60 seconds.
  2. Test on Ethernet to separate line problems from WiFi problems.
  3. Improve WiFi coverage with AT&T’s Smart WiFi extenders or a mesh system if wired speed is fine.
  4. For Internet Air, place the receiver near a window on the side of the house facing the tower, as shown in the app.
  5. Check for outages in the AT&T app or website.
  6. Contact AT&T with your test results if wired speeds stay well below your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why is AT&T Fiber upload as fast as download?

Fiber carries data equally well in both directions, so AT&T Fiber plans are symmetrical. It’s a big advantage for video calls, cloud backups and content creators.

Can I get 5 Gbps over WiFi?

No current WiFi device reaches multi-gig speeds in real use. You need a computer with a 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps Ethernet port and a matching cable to see those numbers.

Is this the official AT&T speed test?

No. WiFiTest is an independent tool that measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server.
