Is my internet speed good? How this checker works
Enter the download speed from your speed test (and, if you have them, your upload speed and ping). The checker rates your speed, shows what it can handle at the same time and how long common downloads take. If you’ve just used our speed test, your last result is filled in automatically.
Internet speed ratings at a glance
| Download speed | Rating | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 Mbps | Slow | Email and light browsing |
| 10–25 Mbps | Basic | One person browsing and streaming in HD |
| 25–100 Mbps | Good | Small households, 4K streaming, gaming, video calls |
| 100–300 Mbps | Fast | Most families, several people online at once |
| 300–700 Mbps | Very fast | Busy homes, heavy 4K streaming, big downloads |
| 700 Mbps and up | Gigabit-class | Large households and power users |
For reference, the FCC defines broadband as at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. Read more in our guide to what a good internet speed is.
Upload speed and ping matter too
- Upload speed carries your video on calls, your live streams and the files you send. At least 10 Mbps is comfortable for one person; remote workers and creators benefit from 20 Mbps or more. See what is a good upload speed.
- Ping is how quickly your connection responds. Under 50 ms feels smooth for games and calls; under 20 ms is ideal for competitive gaming. Test it with our ping test.
Is your speed good, but the internet still feels slow?
A good result on a speed test doesn’t always mean a good experience everywhere in your home. Common reasons:
- Weak WiFi in rooms far from the router – test again next to the router to compare. Our tips to boost your WiFi signal can help.
- Busy evenings – shared networks slow down at peak hours. Read why internet is slow at night.
- Many devices at once – updates, backups and streaming all share the same connection.
- High ping or jitter – makes calls and games lag even when Mbps look great.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good internet speed for a family?
For a family of 3–5 with streaming, gaming and video calls, 200–500 Mbps download and at least 20 Mbps upload is comfortable.
Is 50 Mbps good?
It’s good for one or two people with HD streaming and calls, but tight for a busy household or frequent large downloads.
Why is my speed test lower than my plan?
WiFi, older devices, background usage and network congestion all reduce results. Test with an Ethernet cable to see the real speed of your line.
How accurate is this checker?
It uses typical bandwidth needs for common activities. Real-world needs vary by app and quality settings, so treat the results as a practical guide.
