How to run a Frontier speed test
- Connect your computer to the Frontier router with an Ethernet cable for the most accurate result. On WiFi, stay close to the router.
- Pause streaming, downloads, cloud backups and video calls on other devices.
- Press START above to measure your download, upload, ping and jitter.
- Compare the result with your Frontier plan. On fiber, check both download and upload – they should be similar.
What speed should you get from Frontier?
Frontier offers two very different technologies. Plans change over time and depend on your address, but they typically look like this:
| Connection | Typical download | Typical upload |
|---|---|---|
| Frontier Fiber | about 500 Mbps – multi-gig | Same as download (symmetrical) |
| Frontier Internet (DSL) | from a few Mbps up to about 100 Mbps | Usually a few Mbps |
On fiber with a wired connection, you should usually see results close to your plan for both download and upload. DSL speeds depend heavily on your distance from Frontier’s equipment, so results vary a lot from home to home.
Why is my Frontier internet slow?
- WiFi, not fiber – fiber lines are rarely the bottleneck; weak WiFi in distant rooms usually is.
- Device limits – older laptops and phones can’t receive gig speeds over WiFi.
- DSL distance – on DSL, the farther you are from the provider’s equipment, the slower the line.
- Old router – an older router can’t pass multi-gig speeds or modern WiFi.
- Background usage – updates, backups and other devices streaming.
How to fix slow Frontier internet
- Restart the router (and the ONT power if your technician showed you how) – unplug for 60 seconds, then plug back in.
- Test wired vs WiFi – if wired is fast, improve WiFi with better placement or a mesh system. Compare options in mesh WiFi vs extender.
- Use a 2.5 Gbps port and cable for multi-gig plans – a standard gigabit port caps you around 940 Mbps.
- Check the Frontier app for outages and equipment status.
- Check ping and jitter with our ping test if games or calls lag.
- Contact Frontier with your wired results if speeds stay well below your plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is Frontier Fiber upload as fast as download?
Yes, Frontier Fiber plans are typically symmetrical, so your upload result should be close to your download result on a wired connection.
Why does my Frontier gig plan show only around 300–600 Mbps?
Almost always because of WiFi or an older device. Test with an Ethernet cable connected directly to the router.
Is this an official Frontier speed test?
No. WiFiTest is independent and not affiliated with Frontier Communications. It measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server, which reflects your real-world internet speed.
