WiFiTest is an independent service and is not affiliated with Spectrum. The test measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server.

How to test your Spectrum internet speed

  1. Connect your computer to the Spectrum router or modem with an Ethernet cable for the most accurate result. On WiFi, stay close to the router.
  2. Stop streaming, downloads and video calls on other devices during the test.
  3. Press START above to measure your download, upload, ping and jitter.
  4. Compare the result with your Spectrum plan, and test again at a busy time such as 8–10 pm.

What speed should you get from Spectrum?

Spectrum (Charter) runs mainly a cable network. Plans and speeds depend on your area and change over time, but they typically look like this:

Plan tier Typical download Typical upload
Standard plan about 300–500 Mbps about 10–20 Mbps
Gig plan about 1 Gbps about 35 Mbps (higher in upgraded areas)
Multi-gig plans about 2 Gbps up to several hundred Mbps where available

On a wired connection you should usually get close to your plan’s download speed. If WiFi results are much lower, the problem is most likely the WiFi, not the Spectrum line.

Why is my Spectrum internet slow?

  • Router placement – a router in a cabinet, basement or corner of the house gives weak WiFi in other rooms.
  • Outdated equipment – older modems and routers may not support gig speeds or modern WiFi.
  • Neighborhood congestion – cable bandwidth is shared, so evenings can be slower in some areas.
  • Background usage – updates, cloud backups and streaming on other devices.
  • Cabling issues – damaged coax cables or old splitters can cause slowdowns and disconnections.

How to fix slow Spectrum internet

  1. Restart your modem and router – unplug both for 60 seconds, plug in the modem first, then the router.
  2. Check the connections – tighten the coax cable and remove splitters you don’t need.
  3. Compare wired and WiFi results – if wired is fast, improve your WiFi with a better router position or a mesh system.
  4. Use the My Spectrum app to check for outages and restart your equipment.
  5. Ask about an equipment upgrade if your modem or router is several years old.
  6. Contact Spectrum support with your test results if wired speeds stay well below your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Spectrum upload speed much lower than download?

That is normal on cable internet. Download speeds are usually 10–30 times higher than upload. Some areas are being upgraded with faster upload; check with Spectrum for your address.

How fast should Spectrum WiFi be?

Close to a modern router, many devices reach 300–600 Mbps over WiFi. Farther away or through several walls, 100–200 Mbps is common. For full gig speeds, use Ethernet.

Is this an official Spectrum speed test?

No. WiFiTest is independent and measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server, which reflects your real-world speed on the internet.
