How to test your Verizon internet speed

  1. Use an Ethernet cable between your computer and the Verizon router for the most accurate result, or stay close to the router on WiFi.
  2. Pause streaming, downloads and video calls on other devices.
  3. Press START above to measure download, upload, ping and jitter.
  4. Compare the result with your Verizon plan and repeat the test at different times of the day.

What speed should you get from Verizon?

Verizon home internet comes in two main forms: Fios fiber and 5G Home Internet (plus LTE Home in some rural areas). Plans and speeds change over time and vary by address.

Service Typical download Typical upload
Fios fiber about 300 Mbps – 2 Gbps, depending on plan Close to download speed (near-symmetrical)
5G Home Internet roughly 100–300 Mbps, depending on plan and signal roughly 10–50 Mbps
LTE Home Internet roughly 25–50 Mbps a few Mbps

On Fios with a wired connection, you should normally see results close to your plan in both directions. 5G Home results vary more, because they depend on signal strength and how busy the local network is.

Why is my Verizon internet slow?

  • WiFi limits – gig plans can only be fully used on Ethernet or with the newest WiFi devices close to the router.
  • Router location – a router placed at the edge of the house leaves weak WiFi in other rooms.
  • 5G signal – the position of the 5G receiver, walls and windows have a big effect on speed.
  • Network load – 5G and LTE home internet share capacity with mobile users in the area, especially in the evening.
  • Background usage – updates, backups and streaming on other devices.

How to fix slow Verizon internet

  1. Restart your router (and the 5G receiver) by unplugging it for 60 seconds, or from the My Verizon app.
  2. Test on Ethernet to find out whether the line or the WiFi is the problem.
  3. For 5G Home, use the signal indicator in the Verizon app to find the best spot – usually high up and near a window.
  4. Improve WiFi coverage with a Verizon extender or a mesh system if wired speed is good.
  5. Check for outages and equipment updates in the My Verizon app.
  6. Contact Verizon with your test results if wired Fios speeds stay well below your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Verizon Fios faster than 5G Home Internet?

Usually yes. Fios fiber gives more consistent speeds, near-symmetrical upload and lower ping. 5G Home can be very good with a strong signal, but it varies more during the day.

Why is my 5G Home speed different every day?

Wireless home internet depends on signal quality and on how many people use the same tower. Small daily changes are normal; large drops are worth reporting.

Is this the official Verizon speed test?

No. WiFiTest is an independent tool that measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server.
