How to test your Xfinity internet speed
- For the most accurate result, connect your computer to the Xfinity gateway with an Ethernet cable. On WiFi, sit in the same room as the gateway.
- Pause streaming, downloads and video calls on other devices.
- Press START above to measure download, upload, ping and jitter.
- Compare the result with the speed of your Xfinity plan, and repeat the test in the evening when the network is busiest.
What speed should you get from Xfinity?
Xfinity (Comcast) mostly uses a cable network, with fiber in some areas. Plan names and speeds vary by location and change often, but they generally fall into these tiers:
| Plan tier | Typical download | Typical upload |
|---|---|---|
| Entry plans | about 150–300 Mbps | about 10–20 Mbps |
| Mid-tier plans | about 400–800 Mbps | about 20–100 Mbps |
| Gigabit plans | about 1–2 Gbps | up to a few hundred Mbps in upgraded areas |
On a wired connection you should normally see at least 80–90% of your plan’s download speed. Over WiFi, especially on gigabit plans, lower results are common and usually caused by the WiFi itself, not the line.
Why is my Xfinity internet slow?
- WiFi limits – walls, distance and older devices often cut speeds in half.
- Old gateway or modem – a gateway that is several years old may not support your current plan speed.
- Evening congestion – cable networks are shared by the neighborhood, and some areas slow down at peak times.
- Data-hungry devices – cloud backups, game downloads and 4K streams on other devices.
- Line or signal issues – loose coaxial connections or splitters can reduce speed and cause dropouts.
How to fix slow Xfinity internet
- Restart your gateway – unplug it for 60 seconds or restart it from the Xfinity app.
- Check the coax cable – make sure it is tight at the wall and the gateway, and remove unnecessary splitters.
- Test on Ethernet – if wired speed is fine but WiFi is slow, move the gateway to a central spot or add mesh WiFi points.
- Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band on devices close to the gateway for higher WiFi speeds.
- Check your equipment – ask Xfinity whether your gateway supports your plan, or upgrade if it is outdated.
- Contact support with your speed test results if wired speeds stay far below your plan.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Xfinity upload speed so low?
Cable networks traditionally give much less upload than download. Some areas have been upgraded with higher upload speeds; ask Xfinity whether your address qualifies.
Why don’t I get gigabit speeds on WiFi?
Most phones and laptops can’t reach 1 Gbps over WiFi, even close to the router. Test with an Ethernet cable to see your real line speed.
Is this the official Xfinity speed test?
No. WiFiTest is an independent tool that measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare server – a good reflection of everyday browsing and streaming speed.
